Run north through salt air
A possible approach leaves Swakopmund along the coast, passes Henties Bay and may detour to Cape Cross only when time, access and the confirmed itinerary allow.
Volcanic ring · Remote desert expedition
Messum is not the easy choice—and that is the point. This is a remote, rough and serious desert journey.

Planning note: This page describes public destination context and a possible expedition. Orange Sky must confirm whether this tour is currently offered, plus the exact route, Cape Cross detour, permit, duration, price, vehicle, supplies and inclusions.
A proposed journey
The sequence below explains the destination. Orange Sky must confirm the actual route and stops.
A possible approach leaves Swakopmund along the coast, passes Henties Bay and may detour to Cape Cross only when time, access and the confirmed itinerary allow.
Recognised tracks cross ecologically sensitive gravel plains and lichen fields before following the Messum River direction. Stay on established tracks; a new tyre line can outlast the visit.
Messum is not a meteorite crater. It is the eroded remnant of a volcanic ring complex formed about 130 million years ago as Gondwana began to split apart.
Weathered formations, scattered Welwitschias and archaeological traces associated with Damara nomads give the basin human as well as geological depth. Henno Martin mapped Messum in 1939.
The scale, sharp rock and sparse route network demand disciplined navigation, enough water and fuel, and a capable recovery plan rather than improvisation.

Questions
No. Messum is an eroded volcanic ring complex associated with Early Cretaceous rifting and the breakup of Gondwana.
Oryx, springbok, ostrich and black-backed jackal may occur in the wider desert, with birds also possible. Here, wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.
Lichen fields and desert surfaces are extremely slow to recover. Leaving the established tracks can create damage that remains visible for decades.
Treat Messum as a remote expedition, not a casual detour. Confirm the current route and permit, travel with knowledgeable guidance, and carry appropriate water, fuel, navigation, spare tyres and recovery equipment.
